The World Parks Day

The European Union in Georgia is marking "The World Parks Day" by a tree planting event. It is planned to plant 50 seedlings of Catalpa tree in the Public School backyard in the village Khornabuji, Dedoplistskaro Municipality, Kakheti, with the support of local authority and participation of the pupils from the Municipality Public Schools and local population. This is the first time when this event is celebrated in Georgia and hopefully many other organizations will follow and make it a good tradition for better world. It is important to highlight that the event is jointly organised by the International Organization Mercy Corps and CENN - Caucasus Environmental NGO Network.

Silesia Park in Chorzow (Poland) will be celebrating World Parks Day’12 inviting 100 kids from the nearby kindergartens and primary schools for a tour presenting the wide variety of trees growing in our park.The idea of “Yew-Tree & Me” event is to teach how to become a nature lover and explain why it is so important to look after the greenery as well as to protect/respect the nature in general and the trees in particular. The kids will hear about the importance of tree’s presence in our ecosystem and learn on spot about numerous species of trees including those considered as endangered and rare. At the end of the event our little guests will be invited to plant 20 yew-trees. Special area in the park will be prepared for this purpose. World Parks Day’12 will be covered by the local media.

4 Day exhibition depicting concepts that may emerge in future park designs. Exhibition divided into 4 areas reflecting various user groups namely toddlers, youth, adults and senior citizens. The message that we would like to convey is that parks play an important role in the life of communities irrespective of the age of the individual. The benefits of having parks and the possibilities it presents for adding to the quality of life of communities will be shared and communicated over the 4 days. Furthermore, the futuristic take in terms of the design and layout highlights the importance of having to produce park designs that respond to the changing urban environment and the changing needs of urban communities. The exhibition has been designed and constructed by the staff of the City of Cape Town Parks Department and has been supported by various partners such as the MTN Science Centre.

Our Parks Our Space

The Western Cape Branch of the Institute for Environment and Recreation will be hosting a day of fun-filled activities taking place at 3 public open space facilities within the Stellenbosch Municipal area. Events planned for the three open spaces reflects the different activities that can take place in public open spaces and parks. The main event will be held in a designated nature reserve and will highlight the importance of managing biodiversity and environmental protection. The second park, adjacent to the river will reflect the more passive activities, such as art and crafts which can take place in an open space and the third venue, known as Die Braak, will host as series of sporting activities in which people can participate, reflecting the possibility of having active recreation in the public space or park. Visitors to the event will be encouraged to take the 5km circular route to visit the respective parks and the activites that will take place there, as part of a family fun walk, aimed at encouraging all members of the family to participate in the event. Other events on the day include nature walks in the nature reserve, music and other entertainment, games, face painting, jumping castles, activities for the young and old.
